Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

Piercing aftercare tips with artistic decorations.

Tattoo after care

First 72 Hours: Your Critical Tattoo Aftercare Window

The first three days after getting inked are the most crucial for proper healing. During this initial phase, your fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound, making aftercare essential to prevent infection, preserve ink integrity, and reduce scarring. Follow these steps closely to support optimal recovery.

  1. Leave the Bandage On (6–24 hours): Your artist will cover the tattoo with a breathable wrap like Hustle Butter Aftercare Wrap or traditional film. Keep it intact for the duration recommended—typically 6 to 24 hours—depending on placement and skin type. This protects against bacteria while allowing plasma to absorb.
  2. Wash Gently, 2–3 Times Daily: After removing the bandage, wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free, antimicrobial soap. Use clean hands to lightly cleanse—never scrub. Pat dry with a clean paper towel; avoid cloth towels that harbor bacteria.
  3. Apply a Pea-Sized Moisturizer: After each wash, apply a thin layer of a specialized tattoo aftercare ointment or unscented lotion. Over-moisturizing can suffocate the skin, so less is more.
  4. Avoid Soaking and Sun: No swimming, baths, or direct sun exposure. Stick to quick showers to prevent excess moisture.
  5. Wear Loose, Clean Clothing: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton to reduce friction and irritation.

Following these steps ensures a clean, healthy foundation for your new body art, especially important for clients in humid regions like Tennessee.
